Entering the 2026 WGI World Championships — the largest in history, with 356 guards — Southington was seeded 26th in Scholastic A. They won gold outright with a 97.615, in their first-ever appearance at World Championships: the lowest-seeded guard ever to win any class, and the first Connecticut gold in any class in 20 years. The team came home to a police escort, a crowd on the Town Green, Board of Education honors, and town council recognition.
The guard is its own competitive program in its fourth year, drawing members from the BKMB color guard — 36 student performers on two competing teams, JV and Varsity, with 9 staff, supported by the Southington Band Backers. JV auditions in November and competes on its own schedule; in 2026 both teams placed first at the MAC Championships.
Ahead of each winter season, local businesses can sponsor the guard’s road back to Dayton. Running the full JV-through-Varsity program costs over $50,000 annually — travel, training, equipment, and competition fees.
